man to man

birds. bees. flowers. and dogs?

Parenting brings many joys and some dreaded responsibilities.   We know having “the talk” is necessary…

but--

We have been putting it off!   Lincoln is 8 and we want him to hear about this from us.  See I can’t even say it… SEX.  He is getting older and wiser.  I never remember my parents discussing in detail,  this delicate topic with me. Of course the importance of chastity was addressed, but "the talk"-NO.  Until the NIGHT BEFORE MY WEDDING.  I’ll spare you all the details.  My dear mother took me aside and asked if I had any questions?  Seriously.  The night before my wedding?   Beyond uncomfortable.

Nowadays, leaving it for him to learn on his own isn’t an option!

Where do dogs come into the equation?  I’m sure you can imagine.  My parents’ house has turned into Doggy Daycare (if you knew my mom-you would realize how out of character this is).  At any given time there are 2-4 dogs around.  (Works for me.  We practically have a dog-without having to care for one.)

Today John(my bro) had his dog and Crystal's (his future bride) dog over.  The kids excitedly told us that Zeus (John’s dog) was so nice!  He was keeping Princess warm.  “Isn’t that why he’s on top of her?”  Ya. Sure.

OH DEAR.

Us adults burst into laughter.  We tried to brush it aside.  While the younger kids were clueless, Lincoln couldn’t drop the issue.  “Why were you laughing?  It’s not really that funny-is it?  Was he just keeping her warm?  What was so funny?”

{I saw the look in his eyes.}  Like he knows there is more to it.

I am not ready for this.  It’s here, ready or NOT!

p.s -for those more experienced parents – I welcome your advice.  Please, feel free to share.  Except you mom… I already know your approach :)!

Tara...you seriously are HILARIOUS! Good luck with this...I hae NO advice! Let us know what you find that works and what doesn't so we don't have to make the same mistakes!

Tara, it sounds like there is never a dull moment in your house. That is funny stuff. The story about your mom cracks me up.

We had "THE TALK" with both Quinton (11) and Skylar (9) when I was pregnant with Quade, 3 years ago. They were both asking so many questions and I think me telling them that Heavenly Father just magically (SP?) puts a baby in mommys tummy was not cutting it.
So we sat both of them down and I was so surprised at how blunt I was with them. It was something I never thought I would be able to spit out, but once I started I couldn't stop. Then when I told them that a girls privates were called a vagina they lost it. They couldn't stop laughing and that was the end of that.

Good luck, I know you will do great!

The night before your wedding? Nothing like waiting till the last possible second. I think that is the approach I will take. I have an 8 year old and that is the LAST thing on the list of things I need to talk with him about. Good luck to you.

Oh the dreaded birds and bees. They are never going to grow up...they don't need to know about that STUFF! LOL

I remember you telling me what Mom told you that night. Talk about awkward.. That was quite a funny situation with the dogs. Lincoln really REALLY wanted to know what we thought was so hilarious.

Alyssa--ya I spared mom the true embarrassment by leaving out the majority of the details.

Did you see the question in his eyes? He is so curious. I don't know what we're going to do with him.

The best book ever..."How To Talk To Your Child About Sex" by Linda and Richard Eyre...seriously, go buy it and read it all before talking to him. It is so helpful!! It even has ideas for the best kids books to assist you in "the talk".

hahahahahahaha...so glad it is you and not me. I already informed D that it would be his "job".

Jessica-thank you for the book reference. I will go get that this week!

Stacia- Bob has been informed that he is doing most of the talking as well. But I have to be there to make sure it stays PG!
